About us
At Kansas City Wallpaper, we have a passion for the craft of wallpaper installation. We are a family-owned and operated business that has been creating amazing spaces for our clients across the Kansas City metro since 1976.
Who we are
We joke that wallpaper paste must run through our veins. Our owner is Kevin Frye, a second-generation wallpaper installer.
Kansas City Wallpaper’s history
The 1970s
Our father was one of the best wallpaper hangers in the Kansas City area from the 1960s through the 1990s. He started teaching Kevin the wallpaper trade at the tender age of 13.
In 1976, when Kevin was just 15, he had already made a name for himself. He started working with a Kansas City builder, installing wallpaper in new homes professionally.
By the time he was 17, Kevin was hired by a commercial union shop as a journeyman foreman to install commercial wallcoverings with another seasoned hanger under him. He earned $12.19 per hour in 1978 — $2,000 above average income at the time!
The 1980s
Kevin left the union job to work for himself in the early 1980s, hanging wallpaper for one of the top builders in the Kansas City area.
After a couple years Kevin accepted an offer to work for another large union shop, running their wallcovering operations. They earned recognition in half a dozen local, Midwest and national trades publications for the restoration of the ceiling in the original Nelson Art Gallery inside the Kansas City Library circa 1930.
The 1990s-2010s
In 1991 Kevin, opened his own shop, picking up contracts with Sprint, Excelsior Springs school district, Providence hospital, trucking companies, builders, Elms hotel, designers and architects.
In the late 1990s, there was a seismic shift in trends and wallpaper went out of fashion.
Kevin adapted, applying the skills he had learned through the years to rehabbing homes and remodeling.
Today
Wallpaper is the darling of the interior design scene once again, and Kevin and his team are at the forefront of the industry. He brings his years of experience, love and passion for the trade to every project.
Today, the look of wallpaper is refreshed — embracing texture, colors, patterns and eclectic styles that feel modern and current. You see wallpaper and wallcovering in a wide range of applications, from full rooms to custom murals — adding personality and interest to their space.
